If you’re staying in one of our beautiful TLC Villas properties, chances are you’ll want to explore both of our favorite islands — St. Thomas and St. John. Though they’re just a short ferry ride apart, each island offers its own unique rhythm, charm, and beauty.
Getting Here
Most visitors fly into Cyril E. King Airport (STT) on St. Thomas. From there, it’s just a scenic 30-minute drive across the island to the Red Hook Ferry Terminal on the east end. Once you arrive, you can grab a quick drink or snack from one of the nearby cafés while you wait to board.
The Red Hook to Cruz Bay Ferry
The people ferry between Red Hook (St. Thomas) and Cruz Bay (St. John) is one of our favorite parts of the trip! The ride takes about 20 minutes, gliding across crystal-clear turquoise waters with views of neighboring cays and lush green hills.
First Departure: 5:30 AM from Red HookLast Ferry: Around 10:00 PMFrequency: Runs hourly starting at 9 AMReturn Trips: Begin at 6:00 AM from Cruz Bay and continue hourly throughout the day
You can check the official ferry schedule anytime at dpw.vi.gov/ferries.
- Pro tip: The ferry runs on “island time,” so while departures are consistent, it’s always a good idea to arrive at least 15 minutes early
Why You Should Explore Both Islands
Even though the ferry ride is short, you’ll be amazed by how different the two islands feel:
- St. Thomas offers a lively energy — think boutique shopping, beach bars, and world-class dining.
- St. John, on the other hand, feels like a natural paradise — two-thirds of the island is protected national parkland, with hiking trails, secluded beaches, and peaceful coves.
Both are stunning, both are unforgettable, and both are worth experiencing during your stay.
TLC Villas’ Recommendation
Whether you’re staying on St. Thomas or St. John, we always suggest taking at least one day to hop the ferry and explore. Grab your camera, your sense of adventure, and let the journey itself be part of your vacation story.
After all, with TLC Villas, paradise is just a ferry ride away.

The Interisland Ferry from Crown Bay Marina is also an option. It’s just five minutes from the airport and takes about a half hour.
You are completely right and also it is my favorite ferry! Though that one isn’t always running (takes a break and stops operating for off season) so depends the time of year you are visiting.
