A Travel Tip from TLC Villas Property Management, St. Thomas USVI
At TLC Villas, we want your vacation in St. Thomas to be seamless from arrival to departure. While no one likes cutting their beach time short on departure day, we strongly recommend listening to your airline when they say to arrive at the airport 3 hours before your flight — especially here in St. Thomas.
Here’s why.
Checked Bag? The 90-Minute Rule Is Real.
If you are checking a bag, you must have it checked in at least 90 minutes before your flight departure. Not in line. Not almost to the counter. Fully checked in.
If you miss that cutoff, the airline can — and often will — deny boarding.
We’ve seen it happen. It’s not flexible.
So if your flight leaves at 2:00 PM:
- You need to be at the airport by 11:00 AM
- Your checked bag must be processed by 12:30 PM
No exceptions, even if you’re just a few minutes late.
Yes, It’s a U.S. Territory — But You Still Go Through Customs
Many travelers are surprised to learn that even though the U.S. Virgin Islands is a U.S. territory, you must still clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection when departing.
In addition to customs, you’ll also go through:
- Standard TSA security screening
- An agriculture inspection scan
The agriculture check ensures no restricted food or plant items are leaving the island. This adds another layer of time to the process.
A Charming but Old-School Airport
Cyril E. King Airport (STT) has island charm — and an older system to match.
Things to keep in mind:
- Systems can move slower than mainland airports.
- Air conditioning occasionally goes out.
- Flights are sometimes delayed due to runway potholes, which are more common than you might expect.
It’s all part of the Caribbean character — but it means you shouldn’t cut your timing close.
Pro Tip: Head to the Bar
If you arrive early (as we suggest), make it enjoyable.
The airport bar is:
- Usually the coolest spot temperature-wise
- Full of friendly travelers
- A great place to relax before your flight
Island vibes don’t end until you board the plane.
Bringing Food? Read This First.
You can bring outside food through the airport — but:
- Avoid pork products.
- Avoid anything that looks like pork unless clearly labeled.
- Expect your food to be inspected during agriculture screening.
Sandwiches and snacks are fine — just pack smart and be prepared to show what you have.
The “Red Cap” Option (When Available)
If you have a checked bag and encounter a long line outside the terminal, there is sometimes a Red Cap service available.
These airport attendants (wearing red) can assist with:
- Handling your checked luggage
- Expediting your check-in process
The customary tip is around $20 per person.
However:
- This service may be suspended during very busy periods.
- Priority may be given to elderly passengers or those with disabilities.
- It is not guaranteed.
If it’s available, it can be a helpful option. But don’t rely on it as your only plan — still arrive early.
Our Departure Day Recommendation
At TLC Villas Property Management, we recommend:
– Leave your villa at least 3.5 to 4 hours before departure
– Assume lines will be long
– Plan for customs + agriculture screening
– Prepare for island pace
– Make your last stop the airport bar and enjoy one final rum punch
We want your final memory of St. Thomas to be a relaxed one — not a stressful sprint through the airport.
If you have questions about departure timing during your stay, our TLC Villas team is always happy to help you plan.
Safe travels, and we can’t wait to welcome you back to paradise.
